Summary
When Cork O'Connor journeys far from his beloved Minnesota lake country to the scorching heat of the Arizona desert in July, he is a man on a mission. He and his new wife, Rainy Bisonette, are seeking information about her son, Peter, who vanished after leaving a cryptic voice-mail message in which he seemed to confess to a killing. Deeply concerned, Cork and Rainy fly to Coronado County, where they believe Peter has been working as a counselor at a high-end drug-rehab center. When they arrive, they learn that Peter was fired six months earlier and hasn't been heard from since. Following the only lead they have, the two head to the little desert town of Sulfur Springs where Peter has been receiving his mail. No one in Sulfur Springs will admit to knowing Peter, but it's clear that Cork and Rainy's questions are making some of the townspeople nervous. Before long, they become the targets of a violent - and nearly fatal - attack. As they desperately gather scraps of information, Cork and Rainy begin to grasp that they've stepped into something much larger than they could ever have imagined. A war is going on along the border involving drug traffickers, illegal immigrants, and a small group of activists trying to help the most vulnerable survive against all odds. "Trust no one in Coronado County" is a refrain they hear again and again. Cork finds himself battling not only the nightmarish soaring temperatures and sudden torrential storms, but also his growing sense that Rainy might know more about what's going on than she is willing to admit. If he can't trust his own wife, who can he trust?
